Shaving with a Man's Electric Razor
Some men prefer to use electric razors. They feel that the best electric razors are faster and less messy, and less likely to leave cuts on their face. They can be portable, too, so if you are constantly on the go or if your beard grows really fast, you can take it with you. If you are not accustomed to an electric shaver, give your face 2-3 weeks to acclimate.
- Keep your electric razor clean. Clean out the whiskers after each use and use a cleaning solution about once a week. Follow the cleaning instructions according to your specific electric razor. Lubricate your electric razor according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- When using an electric shaver, shave against the grain of your hair. Use light pressure and don’t shave too fast.
- Use a pre-shave lotion to avoid dry skin. These pre-shaves can also bristle up your beard for a closer shave. Male Species makes an electric shave primer that contains Lidocaine as a preventative for irritation.
Electric shavers are obviously an investment compared to the traditional blade razors. It is essential that you research the shavers to find the appropriate one for you.
There are two types of electric shavers: foil and rotary. Rotary shavers are better at cutting longer hairs than foil shavers but a foil provides a closer shave. Rotaries are easier to maneuver in the tricky areas, such as the chin and neck. There are now shavers on the market that give you the best of both worlds.
The Braun Syncro line has three models of foil shavers. Prices range from $95 to $135.
Norelco makes two popular lines of rotary electric shavers: the Norelco Spectra (from about $130 - $170) and the older line, Norelco Quadra (from about $ 80 to $ 130). One advantage of the Norelco is that it can be rinsed under the tap.
Reviewers have rated these two lines as the top foil (Braun Syncro) shaver and the top rotary (Norelco Spectra and Quadra) shaver.
Be sure to research electric shavers thoroughly before buying. There are many on the market and it is important to buy an established, reliable brand that gives you the shave that you want.
